Insomnia can involve difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night or waking too early. Zopiclone and zolpidem are two medicines that may be prescribed when short-term treatment is considered appropriate. In discussions about zolpidem vs zopiclone, both medicines affect calming pathways involving GABA and can cause sleepiness. Zopiclone may produce a bitter or metallic taste and next-day tiredness, while zolpidem can also cause daytime drowsiness and a metallic taste or dry mouth. Neither medicine should be combined with alcohol, and both require careful use because dependence can develop. Treatment should follow a healthcare professional's instructions.
